Ingredients

  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry thawed
  • 2 medium baking apples peeled, cored, and diced
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1 tsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 1 large egg beaten with 1 tbsp water for egg wash

Equipment

  • 1 Baking Sheet
  • 1 Parchment Paper
  • 1 Mixing Bowl

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the diced apples, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Mix well until the apples are fully coated.
  3. Gently unfold the thawed puff pastry sheet on the prepared baking sheet. Spoon the apple filling down the center third of the pastry. Make diagonal cuts, about 1-inch apart, down the two outer sides of the pastry.
  4. Fold the top and bottom ends of the pastry over the filling. Then, fold the side strips alternately over the filling to create a braided pattern.
  5. Brush the entire surface of the braid with the prepared egg wash. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed up and deep golden brown.
  6. Let the apple puff pastry cool on the baking sheet for at least 10 minutes before slicing and serving. Enjoy warm.

Notes

Tip 1: Keep the Pastry Cold. For the flakiest results, work quickly with the puff pastry while it's still chilled.
Tip 2: Apple Choice Matters. Use firm, tart apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp that hold their shape well during baking.
Tip 3: Serving Suggestion. This pastry is delicious on its own but is even better served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce.
