Ingredients

For the Fudgy Brownie Layer
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
For the Moist Banana Bread Layer
  • 2 large ripe bananas mashed
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg

Equipment

  • 1 8x8 inch baking pan
  • 2 Mixing Bowls

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line an 8x8 inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang to easily lift the brownies out later.
  2. To prepare the brownie batter, whisk together the melted butter and granulated sugar in a large bowl. Beat in the eggs one at a time until fully incorporated.
  3. Fold in the flour, cocoa powder, and a pinch of salt until just combined. Stir in the semi-sweet chocolate chips. Spread the brownie batter evenly in the bottom of the prepared pan.
  4. To make the banana bread batter, mash the ripe bananas in a separate medium bowl. Whisk in the melted butter, egg, and brown sugar until smooth.
  5. In a small bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Add these dry ingredients to the wet banana mixture and stir until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Dollop the banana bread batter over the brownie batter. Use a knife to gently swirl the two batters together to create a marbled effect.
  7. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs. Allow the Banana Bread Brownies to cool completely in the pan on a wire rack before cutting into squares.

Notes

Use Very Ripe Bananas: For the best flavor and moisture, use bananas with plenty of brown spots.
Cool Completely: Allowing the brownies to cool fully is crucial for achieving a fudgy texture and clean slices.
