Ingredients

  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 4 tsp baking powder Ensure it is fresh for the best rise.
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 cups buttermilk Full-fat is recommended.
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter melted (1 stick)

Equipment

  • 1 8x8-inch baking dish
  • 1 Mixing Bowl

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C). Melt the butter and pour it into an 8x8 inch baking dish, ensuring the bottom is fully coated.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
  3. Pour the buttermilk into the dry ingredients. Use a spatula to stir until just combined. Do not overmix; the dough will be soft and sticky.
  4. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently pat it into a rectangle about 1/2 inch thick. Cut the dough into 9 equal squares.
  5. Carefully place the dough squares into the prepared baking dish with the melted butter. Bake for 20-25 minutes, until the tops are golden brown.
  6. Let the biscuits cool for a few minutes in the pan before serving. Best enjoyed warm.

Notes

Buttermilk Substitute: No buttermilk? No problem! Add 2 tablespoons of white vinegar or lemon juice to a measuring cup, then fill with regular milk to the 2-cup line. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes to curdle before using.
Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
