Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp Olive Oil
  • 12 oz Smoked Sausage Andouille or Kielbasa, sliced into 1/2-inch rounds
  • 2 tbsp Butter Unsalted
  • 1 Yellow Onion chopped
  • 3 cloves Garlic minced
  • 1 medium head Green Cabbage roughly chopped
  • 1 lb Large Shrimp peeled and deveined
  • 2 tsp Cajun Seasoning more to taste
  • 1 tsp Smoked Paprika
  • 1 pinch Salt and Black Pepper to taste

Equipment

  • 1 Large Skillet or Dutch Oven
  • 1 Cutting Board
  • 1 Knife

Method

  1. In a large skillet or Dutch oven, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the sliced sausage and cook until it's nicely browned on both sides, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the sausage with a slotted spoon and set it aside, leaving the rendered fat in the skillet.
  2. Add the butter to the skillet. Once melted, add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  3. Add the chopped cabbage to the skillet. It will seem like a lot at first, but it will cook down. Stir to coat it in the fat and aromatics. Cook for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender-crisp.
  4. Return the cooked sausage to the skillet. Add the raw shrimp, Cajun seasoning, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Stir everything together until well combined.
  5. Continue to cook, stirring frequently, until the shrimp are pink, opaque, and cooked through, about 3-4 minutes. Be careful not to overcook the shrimp.
  6. Serve your Fried Cabbage with Shrimp and Sausage hot, straight from the skillet.

Notes

Tip 1: For tender-crisp cabbage, avoid overcooking. It should be wilted but retain a slight bite.
Tip 2: Pat the shrimp dry before cooking to ensure they sear properly.
Tip 3: Feel free to adjust the level of Cajun seasoning to match your preferred spice level.
