Ingredients

  • 1 lb 85/15 ground beef (450g)
  • 1 large yellow onion diced
  • 8 slices provolone cheese
  • 1 tsp garlic powder (3g)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (15ml)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (15ml)
  • 1/2 tsp salt or to taste
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper or to taste
  • 4 hoagie rolls split
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter (28g), melted

Equipment

  • 1 Large Skillet 12-inch non-stick or cast-iron recommended
  • 1 Baking Sheet
  • 1 Spatula

Method

  1. Preheat oven's broiler to high. Split hoagie rolls, place cut-side up on a baking sheet, and brush with melted butter. Broil for 1-2 minutes until golden brown. Watch closely to prevent burning.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, add olive oil. Add diced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 8-10 minutes until soft, translucent, and sweet.
  3. Push onions to one side of the skillet. Add ground beef to the other side and season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Break up the beef as it cooks for 5-7 minutes until browned. Stir in Worcestershire sauce and combine with the onions.
  4. Lower the heat, spread the meat mixture evenly, and lay provolone slices over the top to form a blanket. Let melt for 2-3 minutes until gooey and draped over the meat.
  5. Scoop the cheesy beef mixture into the toasted hoagie rolls, allowing it to overflow. Serve immediately.

Notes

Don't Overcrowd the Pan: If doubling the recipe, use two skillets or cook the beef in batches to ensure it browns properly.
Choose the Right Beef: 85/15 ground beef provides the best balance of flavor and fat.
Melt Cheese Off the Heat: For the gooiest cheese, add it after the meat is cooked and the heat is low or off.
Toast Your Buns: This is a crucial step to prevent soggy sandwiches and add texture.
