Ingredients

  • 1 package (12 count) King's Hawaiian Rolls
  • 1 lb ground beef 85/15 lean to fat ratio recommended
  • 1/2 cup yellow onion finely diced
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp salt or to taste
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper or to taste
  • 8 slices sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup butter melted
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds

Equipment

  • 1 9x13 inch Baking Dish
  • 1 Large Skillet
  • 1 Small Bowl

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef and diced onion until the beef is browned. Drain any excess grease.
  2. Remove the skillet from the heat. Stir in the mayonnaise, ketchup, 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper until the beef is fully coated.
  3. Without separating the rolls, slice the slab of Hawaiian rolls in half horizontally. Place the bottom half in a 9x13 inch baking dish. Spread the beef mixture evenly over the rolls. Top with the cheddar cheese slices, then place the top slab of rolls on top.
  4. In a small bowl, whisk together the melted butter, 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce, and onion powder.
  5. Brush the butter mixture over the tops of the rolls, then sprinkle with sesame seeds. Cover the dish with aluminum foil.
  6. Bake for 15 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 5-10 minutes, until the tops are golden brown and the cheese is bubbly. Let rest for a few minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, you can add a tablespoon of dijon mustard to the butter topping.
To prevent soggy bottoms, lightly toast the bottom buns for 3-5 minutes before adding the beef mixture.
Feel free to substitute the ground beef with ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
